At the foot of the walls of the old town and next to Peñíscola’s fishing port lies Playa Sur, one of the most highly regarded beaches in this town in the province of Castellón. Its location places it beneath the imposing Papa Luna Castle, offering an incomparable historic setting while enjoying the Mediterranean Sea.

Playa Sur is characterised by its fine, golden sand, and although its length may vary depending on the source (approximately between 300 and 400 metres) and its width is around 35 metres, it is always perceived as a welcoming and well-proportioned space for swimming and strolling.

Another major attraction of Playa Sur is the calmness of its waters, which are usually very tranquil thanks to its sheltered position next to the port. The seabed slopes gently, so the water remains shallow for many metres from the shore, creating an especially safe environment. These features make it an ideal beach for children and families, allowing youngsters to play and swim comfortably while adults enjoy a relaxed swim without strong currents.

One of the highlights of this beach is the opportunity to enjoy a walk along the southern seafront promenade, where visitors can watch fishing boats arrive at the port with the day’s catch, a traditional scene that adds an authentic maritime flavour to the atmosphere. In addition, from the shoreline or the sand itself, there are magnificent views of Peñíscola Castle, a historic symbol of the town that dominates the peninsula over the Mediterranean.

Services and atmosphere
Playa Sur offers lifeguard and rescue services, especially active during the bathing season, providing safety for families and visitors of all ages. It also has showers, foot showers, and basic facilities, as well as children’s play areas and spaces for beach sports such as volleyball.

As a well-equipped urban beach, it also features easy access from the town centre, walkways, shaded areas, sunshade and sunbed hire, and all kinds of facilities to ensure a comfortable stay. Its good connections and range of services make it an ideal option for both tourists and local residents.

In addition, Playa Sur boasts an attractive seafront leisure offer that completes the visitor experience. On the sand itself is the Tumbao Surfing Beach chiringuito, an informal and lively spot to enjoy drinks, music, and a young, relaxed atmosphere. Just a short distance away, Nudo Beach Club offers a more sophisticated proposal, combining cuisine, cocktails, and music in a carefully designed setting—ideal for relaxing during the day or enjoying the sunset with views of the Mediterranean and Peñíscola Castle.

A lively and authentic setting
Its proximity to the fishing port adds a special charm: it is common to see boats docking with fresh fish in the mid-afternoon, enhancing the beach experience with a traditional touch. All this, together with its sheltered location and family-friendly atmosphere, makes Playa Sur a perfect place to enjoy the sun, the sea, and views of one of the most iconic monuments of the Valencian Community.
