Light figures and Christmas-themed choreographies synchronized with music took center stage during the countdown for switching on Peñíscola’s Christmas lights. According to the Councillor for Tourism and Festivities, Ramón Simó, this event “embraces new technologies as an attraction to highlight the spectacular Christmas lighting that illuminates the historical center of the town.”
From a packed Plaza de Bous, at the northern entrance of the citadel, 150 drones welcomed the upcoming holiday festivities last night. The town aims to make this event the highlight of the winter tourism season. As Simó recalled: “To the uniqueness of the Ferrero Rocher lights, last year we added a major expansion of the illumination throughout many streets and façades of the historic quarter. Once again, we have painted our sky with Christmas lights set to music, marking the beginning of a magical month in our ancient town.”
The drone show enabled a shared countdown to switch on the lights that illuminate most of the historic center. After the show, visitors wandered through the streets and squares to discover this year’s installation, which once again includes the Renaissance walls as a spectacular visual feature. “Peñíscola’s iconic silhouette is framed by Christmas lights,” Simó emphasized, adding that the highlight of the lighting is Santa María Square, where the famous chocolate brand has installed its special display. “But it isn’t the only place that shines: we’ve expanded the lighting throughout the town so that visitors can enjoy streets and squares decorated under a cohesive style.”
The lights are expected to remain on until early January, offering more than 40 days to rediscover the town illuminated by nearly two million micro-LEDs.
The Christmas Market
After the lighting ceremony, local authorities opened the traditional Christmas Market, which will remain open until December 14. “This proposal supports local trade in an extraordinary setting like Santa María Square, the epicenter of the new Christmas lights,” said the mayor, Andrés Martínez, encouraging residents and tourists to explore the commercial offerings ahead of the holidays.
