Catedral del vi
Known as the Wine Cathedral of El Pinell de Brai, this remarkable building is one of the most emblematic examples of Catalan industrial Modernist heritage and a must-see for anyone visiting the Terra Alta region. It was designed and built by Cèsar Martinell, a disciple of Antoni Gaudí, and inaugurated in 1922 as an agricultural cooperative dedicated to wine production.
In this project, Martinell applied the principles of Catalan Modernism and the technical innovations learned from Gaudí, combining functionality, aesthetics and symbolism. The result is a building of great architectural beauty, featuring large naves, parabolic arches, exposed brickwork and carefully designed natural lighting that evokes the atmosphere of a cathedral—hence its popular name. All these elements were conceived to optimise the winemaking process and improve working conditions for local farmers.
Today, the Wine Cathedral houses Pagos de Híbera Winery, where tradition and modernity come together to produce high-quality wines that express the character of the land. In addition to wine, the winery also produces olive oils, another of the great gastronomic references of the Terra Alta, made from local olive varieties using environmentally respectful methods.
A visit to the building allows guests to discover both its architectural value and the production process, offering a complete cultural and wine tourism experience. After the tour, visitors can purchase wines, olive oils and other Pagos de Híbera products in the on-site shop, as well as a carefully selected range of local products from the Terra Alta and neighbouring regions.
Pagos de Híbera also offers a restaurant to complete the experience. The restaurant is available for pre-booked groups during the week and is open on Saturdays and Sundays at lunchtime, serving a gastronomic proposal based on local, seasonal cuisine.
The Wine Cathedral of El Pinell de Brai is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, and no prior reservation is required. Guided tours are available, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the historical, architectural and cultural significance of this unique building.
A place where architecture, wine, olive oil and landscape come together to offer a truly unique experience in the heart of the Terra Alta.
