From July 6 to 18, 2026, Peñíscola will once again become one of the leading cultural destinations of the summer with the celebration of the 29th edition of the Peñíscola Castle Classical Theatre Festival. This prestigious event, held in the incomparable setting of the Papa Luna Castle, has established itself as one of the most important theatre festivals in the Valencian Community and throughout Spain.
For nearly two weeks, the iconic fortified complex will host performances inspired by the great authors of world literature, combining classical texts with new adaptations and contemporary stage productions. This year's programme features works based on texts by authors such as Lope de Vega, Federico García Lorca, Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare, Calderón de la Barca, Molière, Ana Caro and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, performed by renowned theatre companies.
The festival will begin on July 6 with free activities along the seafront promenade and in various locations throughout the old town, bringing classical theatre closer to residents and visitors alike. The main performances will take place in the Castle's Parade Ground, a unique venue where history, heritage and the performing arts come together to create an unforgettable cultural experience under the Mediterranean summer sky.
Since its creation in 1997, the Peñíscola Castle Classical Theatre Festival has helped position the town among Spain's leading cultural tourism destinations. Every summer, thousands of spectators enjoy high-quality performances in one of the Mediterranean's most emblematic monuments, making the festival the perfect opportunity to combine culture, history and a seaside holiday.
Attending the Classical Theatre Festival is also an excellent opportunity to discover the charm of Peñíscola's old town, walk along its Templar walls, admire the views from the Papa Luna Castle and enjoy the city's wide range of gastronomic and tourist attractions during the summer season.
